Behind-the-scenes update on all the happenings at DBL, plus an update with puppy in training, Emerald
Pack Email Header February

Dear Friend,

Our team recently caught up with Kristin and Facility Dog Major to see how their first months working together were going. Kristin is a school psychologist at a Tacoma-area high school. She sent us a message to share everyone who helped make Major's placement possible - and that includes YOU!

"The people that raised and helped train Major, and all those who support this program, have helped to shape an animal that provides immeasurable support and relief to everyone he meets. He has already changed the lives of so many young people in his short time working with me at my school building and I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish as a team in the future!"

Every dog we train and place makes a life-changing impact. We thank you for all you do to make this possible.

Sincerely,

Bryan Williams
CEO, Dogs for Better Lives

EMERALD UPDATE

Emerald Pack JAN 2023

The latest pup-date from puppy-in-training, Emerald

Emerald is growing so fast! She loves going on outings with her puppy raisers, Megan and Claire, because it means there will be an adventure! Her raisers are doing a fantastic job getting her out in public and working on her training around distractions.

"We continue to work on all of Emerald's basic commands such as heel, down, stay, come and leave it. She gets excited when she sees other dogs on our walks, so we have been working on distracting her. We also spend extra training time on Emerald’s settling. She has a lot of energy, so we work on this a lot in different settings. One of her favorite outings is to the dog wash place, because that means she gets to take a bath! At home, she loves playing with our dogs Tucker and Finley and watching TV when there are animals on it," said Puppy Raisers Megan and Claire.

Way to go, Team Emerald! Stay tuned next month for an update on Emerald's journey!

Facility Dog Major gets an A+ grade for supporting student mental health

Last summer, Facility Dog Major was placed with Kristin, a school psychologist at one of the public schools in Tacoma, WA. Major has been a welcome, furry face around the halls of the high school, and this Facility Dog team has made a big impact already. Read their story.

Catching up with Hearing Assistance Dog Echo

We recently had a one-year follow-up with Juliet and Hearing Assistance Dog, Echo. This team is doing great! Echo works the smoke alarm, doorbell, door knock and oven timer. Juliet says Echo helps her feel more confident living alone.

Where do Facility Dogs work?

There are many types of settings where a Facility Dog might work. Wherever you find a Facility Dog, know that a lot of special training went into these dogs. In a recent article, we shared seven of the most common facilities where Facility Dogs are placed. Read the article.

Out and about with Assistance Dogs in training

Our Assistance Dogs often take "field trips" to work on their training in new environments. A favorite stop for our trainers is the seasonal aisle at various retail and craft stores. It's a great opportunity to expose the dogs to something new, while snapping a cute photo - of course! Rosemary, who is training at our West Campus, enjoyed her trip down the floral aisle!

A "Taylor" made match

We recently checked in with Autism Assistance Dog Taylor, one year after being placed with James and his family. Taylor is always willing to work, and James calls Taylor his “doggie sister.” James also told me how much Taylor has helped him come out of his shell. James loves it when Taylor performs squish and settle.
